Chapter 1 - Piping Introduction

Piping is used in commercial and industrial applications for fluid handling where the wish is to transmit a fluid from one point to another. You need to look no further than your home to come across a variety of piping systems including water, sewage and possibly gas.

Piping should not be confused with tubing, which is produced in non standard sizes, whereas piping is manufactured to standard dimensions and denoted by a nominal diameter. The outside diameter of pipe is always constant for a given diameter and the inside diameter varies with the wall thickness.

The name piping covers a broad spectrum including pipe, fittings, valves and a piping draftsperson/CAD operator must be familiar with equipment, instrumentation and related disciplines in addition to the many facets of plant design.
